Why You Don’t Always Want to Hire the Cheapest Tree Guy

Table of Contents

Should you hire the absolute cheapest tree guy? When hiring the right person for your tree care, the first thing you might think of immediately is price. You might want to think how you can get out of paying top dollar for tree removal. After all, it’s expensive, as we talk about here.

We wanted to make sure you understand that it’s important to find a balance between quality and saving money. Times are tough economically, but there are tiers of quality to tree service. If you go too cheap, things can go really wrong, and you might end up in a really bad situation.

We think there are tiers of “Tree Guy.” Some of the larger companies in Charlotte have a strong reputation because they have been around a long time. But they have very high overhead cost and are forced to charge premium prices to remain profitable.

Tier 1: The Largest Tree Companies

These are often regional, large firms, owned by big corporations with shareholders and boards.  Only a few of largest tree companies in Charlotte are locally owned.

  • They are full of certified arborists. They have multiple crews that are dispatched each day for jobs.
  • They own the heaviest and most expensive machinery (cranes, large lifts, etc).

These companies do well on:

  • Tree preservation and Plant Health Care (PHC)
  • Removal of historic, large trees when they can’t be save.
  • Very dangerous jobs with limbs over building.
  • Municipal projects for the city or estate level projects for mansions.

They provide:

  • Maximum safety regulation and the strictest of insurance coverage.
  • Detailed documentation and even have teams that do long-term planning (they are like architects.)
  • They can keep on schedule for big complex jobs.  So commercial entities with little free time but tons of bucks might go with them.

Tier 2: The Mid-Range Local Tree Companies

However, it pays to shop around. These are small crews often with an ISA Certified Arborist on staff. Sometime the business owner is even ISA Certified.  Other highlights of mid-range tree guys are:

  • They don’t own large equipment like cranes, lifts etc but do sub these out to complete a complex job as needed.
  • They still do complex/dangerous jobs.
  • They still do PHC (Plant Health Care).
  • Profession, safe and licensed and insured.
  • You pay high for their expertise. But they will be cheaper than tier 1.

They are also harder to find in a google search than the largest companies

Tier 3: The Bargain Bin Tree Guy (aka Chuck in a truck)

They may be found just through word of mouth, but perhaps don’t have a web presence, company, or LLC. We highly advise against hiring them for tree work requiring climbing or removing tree near a house.  They are often uninsured which can make the homeowner or hiring firm liable if there is a accident.
