About 10–20% of our clients ask us this question before hiring us:
“Can you provide a Certificate of Insurance?”
We are always happy to say yes.
I’m not sure exactly what percentage of tree companies in Charlotte carry the proper insurance. I’d say the majority of established professional tree companies probably do. But when you get down to the guys offering tree removal for dramatically less than everyone else, it’s worth asking some questions.
There are certainly homeowners who don’t care. Their thinking is basically, *“I just want this tree cut down as cheaply as possible. I’ll take the risk.”*
That’s their choice. But before making that decision, spend a few minutes searching Google for examples of tree removal gone wrong. You will quickly find some pretty wild examples.
Why Is Professional Tree Removal Expensive?
Tree removal can be a significant expense, and there are good reasons for that.
Two of the biggest are skilled labor and insurance.
Professional tree work requires experienced climbers and equipment operators, specialized equipment, trucks, chippers, lifts, ropes, rigging equipment, chainsaws and a lot of training. Companies also have to account for insurance and the risks involved in performing this type of work every day.
So if one company bids $4,000 to remove your trees and another guy says he’ll do the same job for $1,500, it’s reasonable to ask:
Why is there such a big difference?
Sometimes there is a perfectly good explanation. Maybe the companies plan to approach the job differently or have different equipment.
But sometimes the cheapest price is possible because somebody is cutting corners on insurance, skilled labor, safety or all three.
Things That Can Be More Expensive Than Professional Tree Work
Saving money on the original tree removal doesn’t help much if something goes wrong.
Here are a few expenses that can make the original tree-removal quote look pretty cheap:
1. Roof repairs
2. Paying a second tree company to finish or fix what the first tree guy messed up
3. Concrete, driveway or paver replacement
4. Damage to a septic system
5. A tree or large limb landing on a vehicle
6. Fence, landscaping or structure damage*
7. Injuries to workers or other people on the property
The list goes on.
Tree work involves thousands of pounds of wood being cut, lowered and moved around your house and property. Even experienced professionals can’t eliminate every risk, which is exactly why insurance matters.
Ask for a Certificate of Insurance
If you’re hiring someone for substantial tree work, ask them to provide a current **Certificate of Insurance (COI).
A professional tree company should be accustomed to this request.
At a minimum, you should ask about general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance.
General liability insurance can provide coverage for certain types of property damage or bodily injury arising from the company’s operations, subject to the terms and limits of the policy.
Workers’ compensation is different. It generally provides coverage for employees who are injured while working. Requirements can vary based on the company and circumstances, but from a homeowner’s perspective, the important question is simple:
Does the company working on your property have appropriate insurance for the work they’re doing?
Don’t be afraid to ask.
Insurance Isn’t the Only Thing to Check
I’m not trying to scare anyone. I just want homeowners to understand the importance of hiring a professional company for potentially dangerous tree work.
Insurance is one part of vetting a tree company. There are several other easy things you can check.
Google reviews are probably the easiest place to start.** Look at how many reviews the company has, how long they’ve been receiving them and what customers actually say about their work.
You can also check whether they have an established website and business presence.
Some tree companies also employ ISA Certified Arborists, which is another good sign when you’re looking for professional tree care knowledge and experience.
And don’t be afraid to get multiple estimates.
I often tell homeowners that you don’t necessarily have to pick the cheapest bid—or the most expensive one. Get a few quotes and choose the company you feel most comfortable trusting with your property.
Sometimes that’s the middle bid. Sometimes it isn’t.
