History of Bradford Pear Trees
Bradford Pear Trees are common trees in Charlotte, and the North Carolina region as a whole. They rose in popularity due to their beautiful white spring flowers. The First Lady at the time, Lady Bird Johnson, planted them in DC. Every area that could grow and support Bradford Pear Trees, including Charlotte, followed suit and started to grow them. So you might wonder, “Why do these well-liked trees require removal?”
Unfortunately, there’s a couple reasons why removal is of the utmost necessity. These trees are an invasive species to North Carolina. They crowd out native plants and are a pest to the natural environment here. Basically, they take up too much space and are a destructive force to the ecosystem. They cross-pollinate with other plants even though they were bred to be sterile. They’re discouraged from being grown in the state of North Carolina. There are even incentive programs to get them removed and replaced.
Bradford Pear Trees:
- Have aged to become 40-60 years old and are therefore liable to fall suddenly.
- Die easily and often, and are dangerous when they’ve died.
- Even when not dead, they smell bad, a “rotting stench.”
When they were planted, they were considered low-maintenance and chic. Like many things from the ’60s, they haven’t aged well and need to go. Yes, because of their tendency to age, die, fall on things, but also because it’s environmentally important to plant trees that should really be in North Carolina.
What kind of trees? We suggest you do as many do and plant Maple, Dogwood, and Crapemyrtle.

The Bottom Line
Another incentive to remove? Price. If your Bradford Pear dies, it’s much cheaper to have taken it out when it was still alive. The dead trees are a hazard, and hazardous jobs cost more.
